In 1977, Robert W. Eng III, started what is now the Eng School of Self Defense.
Designed by using the fighting concepts from all over the world, World Combative Arts, uses the best and most practical of all the disciplines.
Training will encompass discipline, physical and mental abilities and respect for God and Country, that will not only lead to success in Martial Arts, but success in life.
Brian is a native of Akron, Ohio, relocating to Charlotte NC in 1984 and ultimately to Clover SC in 1986. Brian began in law enforcement as a reserve officer in 1987 for the Clover Police Department transitioning to full-time in 1989 as a patrol officer. Later that year he transferred to the York County Sheriff’s Office where he is currently retired after serving as the agency training officer. Brian has worked in patrol, traffic enforcement, SWAT, Civil Process & Warrants, investigations and internal affairs prior to training and is a graduate of the 232ndclass of the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia. In his career Brian has become an instructor for the Sheriff’s Office in the following areas;

Brian is also an active runner and enjoys running/training others for various 5k, 10K & obstacle course events in an effort to promote activity, health & well-being.
Brian is a member of the Clover Presbyterian Church where he's served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. He is a member of the Moose lodge in Gastonia, a Mason at Alpine Lodge206 in Clover, and is on the Live Well Clover Committee, a group of Town employees and local business owners working to promote health and wellness for the citizens.
Brian currently works as a national trainer for the US Deputy Sheriff’s Association and lives in Clover with his wife Cherye’ and their 4 dogs, Walker, Sydney, Dudley & Bailey. They have a small farm where they raise alpacas, miniature cattle & chicken
Lisa graduated from Clover High School in 1977, she earned a degree in computer science and worked as an information systems analyst for Duke Energy for 12 years before coming home to be a full-time mom.
Lisa began taking martial arts in 2009 and worked her way through the ranks earning her black belt 2015. She began teaching then and received her first degree in 2017. Lisa recently received her 2nd Degree in 2020.
Lisa and her husband, Tim, have been married for 40 years and have five children and 5 grandchildren. She homeschooled for 25 years and currently enjoys teaching piano from her home, playing keys for her church, hiking, camping, traveling, staying healthy, encouraging other women, and studying God’s Word.
Jonathan is a native of South Carolina and a resident of York County since 1974. Jonathan has served in Law Enforcement in South Carolina for 25 years and is retired. Jonathan attends the Woodhaven Baptist Church where he serves as a Deacon and on the Safety Team for the church. Jonathan is an active member of York Lodge No. 385 and a Hejaz Shriner where he is part of the Hot-Wheels unit supporting the Shriner Hospital.
Jonathan has been involved with martial arts since 1990. He began training with the Eng School of Self-defense in 2010 and has obtained his 2nd degree black belt in the World Combative Art System with his training delivered by Master Brian Boling. Jonathan served as an instructor at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy where he has trained Law Enforcement officers and military personnel for the State of South Carolina. Roger is a career airline pilot, with an extensive aviation security background. He is originally from Scotland and moved to the US in 1995. He’s flown for many different airlines over his 25 year career.
After the tragic events on Sept 11, 2001, Roger became involved with a Dept. of Homeland Security program, that Federally Deputizes and arms pilots in the defense of passenger aircraft in the US.
Part of the training involved includes the training of flight crew in hand to hand defense techniques, which led Roger to his interest in martial arts.
Roger became a York County Reserve Deputy Sheriff in 2011 and ended up meeting Brian Boling, who was his training Lieutenant and eventually training under him at the Eng School and has been a student of the school since 2011. Roger earned his 1st Degree in 2021.
Roger is also a adjunct instructor with the United States Deputy Sheriffs Association. He recently acquired his NRA Pistol Instructor Certification and is also a South Carolina CWP Instructor.
Upon graduating high school Frank enlisted in the US Marines where he served from 1988 -1993. After completing his service he was self-employed for 3 years before joining Lanier in 1997 where he worked as a service technician. Lanier merged with Ricoh Americas in 2005 where he currently work as a Production Print Technician.
In the mid 90's he trained and competed in Judo where he reached the rank of brown belt. Instructor Howell joined the Eng School of Self Defense in 2013 where, under the instruction of Master Brian Boling, he received his black belt in World Combative Arts (2017).
Instructor Howell teaches both kids and adult classes and is a graduate of the Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Defensive Handgun.
Frank is also a NRA Pistol Instructor and SC CWP Instructor.
Instructor Howell is originally from Shelby, NC relocating to Clover, SC in 2006 where he lives with his wife Wendy, their daughter Krista and dog Jax. He has 3 children and 5 grandchildren. Instructor Howell is a member of New River Community Church where he serves as a team leader on the safety team, a member of the Marine Corps League in Shelby NC and serves with the Eng School of Self Defense in its many community endeavors. Frank promoted to a 2nd Degree in 2021.
Charlotte Helms has five children, ranging from age 14 to 27, three of which she is currently homeschooling. She has been a group fitness instructor for over 20 years and is certified by the American Council on Exercise. She has certifications in weight management, fitness nutrition, resistance band training and is YogaFit trained. Currently, she works as a part-time wellness coordinator/fitness instructor with the York County Sheriff’s Office. Charlotte is an NRA certified Basic Pistol Instructor and SC CWP Instructor. She has a degree in Elementary Education from UNC-Greensboro. Through the years she has taught public school, been an instructor with Body and Soul Fitness, worked at the YMCA as a fitness instructor, led afterschool programs, taught children’s gymnastics, taught BLS and CPR classes, volunteered with Live Well Clover, and worked in church from the nursery department through teens.
The Helms family moved to Clover from Rock Hill in 2015 and they began training at the Eng School of Self-Defense. Charlotte had no prior martial arts experience when she began at age 46. She is currently a 2nd Degree black belt and loves to tell others, “It’s not too late, and you are not too old.”
Brooke started training with Eng School in 2014, at just seven years old. She achieved her junior black belt in February 2019. In December 2020 she earned her adult Black Belt and full Instructor status.
Brooke loves coming to help with the kids class where her younger brother Corban and her younger sister Madison also take the class. Her dad and older sister Kaylee, attend the adult class with her. At home, she also has a younger brother Isaiah. Brooke has two horses, some chickens, and two dogs. She enjoys spending time with her friends and being outside. Aside from the martial arts classes, Brooke, her mom and her dad also participate in local 5K races. Brooke is a member at Filbert Presbyterian Church in York SC. She loves being a part of the Eng Family!
Lanni Kaye, is one of the newer Instructors at Eng School Clover. Having been a Flight Attendant and decided to become a pilot, she did that, until she retired and is now a full-time Airbus Simulator Instructor. Instructing is in her blood and after attending classes at Eng School she decided she would move up through the ranks and gain her Black belt and Instructor status and pass on her knowledge. One of the skills we teach at Eng School is firearms defense and retention. Little did we know that Lanni was deathly afraid of guns. In the beginning she couldn't even bear to be in the same room as our plastic training guns, but through her rigorous training and mental gymnastics we apply to our students Lanni was able to finally handle a firearm and even now advocates and assists in our CWP and Handgun safety classes. Lanni is a huge asset to our junior students and women safety classes, having a very encouraging and empathetic attitude towards survival skills for women
Kaylee Siebert earned her black belt in November of 2021 after many years of training at Eng. She started training at Eng to learn basic self-defense but enjoyed the classes, so she continued her training. Kaylee was homeschooled and graduated in 2021. She is currently attending the University of South Carolina Lancaster and is majoring in business administrative accounting. Kaylee is a member of Filbert Presbyterian Church in York, SC. She lives at home with her four younger siblings, all of which attend Eng as well. She loves being a part of the Eng School family!
Luke Helms is a home schooled Sophomore. He has been training at Eng School Clover with his family since 2015. Luke recently moved up to adult Black belt and is now a fulltime instructor.He achieved his Junior Black belt at age 14. Additionally, he has participated in wrestling and BBJ training. He works at Bush n Vine farm and is finishing up his Eagle Scout rank. He has taken on greater leadership roles. Luke is interested in weight training, reading and spending time with his family. Luke is a great role model to our younger students and is always willing to encourage and motivate his fellow instructors and students.
Jonathan Marshall is a brown belt assistant instructor at Eng and is working towards his black belt. Outside of Eng Jonathan works at Bush n’ Vine and is the captain of the York County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Cadets Post #1786. He is also the president of Student Leadership at the homeschool Co-Op, Compass Prep, where he attends as a senior. He attends Temple Presbyterian Church and serves as the church pianist. Jonathan enjoys any competition, playing and listening to music, and running/weightlifting. He loves the opportunity to help at Eng and looks forward to furthering his own and other’s self defense abilities.
Annagrace started her training at Eng School in 2018. She earned her brown belt in November, 2021. She loves helping with her brothers, Jonathan and Caleb, in the kid’s classes. She enjoys training with her father and brothers in the adult class. She also loves training and spending time with her best friend, Brooke Siebert who is a black belt instructor at the Eng School. She loves the amazing, godly environment that the Eng School of Self Defense offers. Annagrace has been homeschooled her whole life and enjoys school and trying new things. She loves being outside and running. Annagrace is also involved at her church, Temple PCA Clover, SC, were she helps lead worship and her father is the pastor. She currently works at Bush-N-Vine in York, SC. She is a member of the York County Sheriff’s Office Cadet program where she learns many different aspects of law enforcement and skills.
Rick is originally from Virginia, where he graduated from Old Dominion University. During his 19-year career in mortgage banking he reached the position of Senior Risk Manager for a large national bank. He then became a financial consultant in the banking industry for a second 19 years.
Rick has retired from the corporate world, and now serves as husband to Kathy, his wife of 42 years, father to three daughters, and “G” to seven energized grandchildren.
Rick is a member of New River Church in Lake Wylie, where he serves as a member of the Elder Board. He also is the church safety team leader, with responsibility for oversight and training of the 47-member team.
He is a member of the IDPA – International Defensive Pistol Association, where he serves as a certified safety officer, and competes regularly in both local and state level matches.
Rick and Kathy currently own an RV and enjoy traveling the countryside as much as possible.
Caleb began his training around 2018, and recently got his brown belt in 2022. Since his time at Eng School of Self Defense, he’s had many opportunities to serve, whether it’s through helping in the kid’s classes, or through the other events that Eng School has hosted. Caleb enjoys training with his brother and sister, Jonathan and Annagrace, and enjoys the time with the other Instructors who have trained and helped him. Above all, Caleb enjoys the people and their godly influence.
